Cafergot

Description

Cafergot is a combined medicine which reduces the attacks of migraine. It contains two ingredients: Ergotamine and caffeine.

Ergotamine increases tone of the smooth muscles on the blood vessels of the brain, so that they are narrowed. A contraction of the blood vessels and reductions of their edema reduces the attacks of headache during migraine.

Caffeine improves and accelerates the absorption of ergotamine in the gastro-intestinal tract and slightly increases its pharmacological action.

Cafergot is quickly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and begins the action within 15-20 minutes. It causes a reduction of headache, slightly decreases prodrome, and dizziness. The drug does not do for the prevention of migraine because it provides a direct action during the edema of the blood vessels and does not prevent their dilation.

In what dose is Cafergot used?

Cafergot should be used at the beginning of the migraine attack. As soon as you felt a peculiar headache or noticed prodrome, take a pill of Cafergot. A pill of Cafergot contains 1 mg of Ergotamine and 100 mg of caffeine.

If the improvement did not happen within 30 minutes, and headache grows, take another pill of Cafergot. The use of the drug may be continued every 30-40 minutes up to achieving the intense therapeutic effect.  Do not exceed the maximal recommended dose of Cafergot – 6 pills per day. Take not more than 10 pills of Cafergot within a week. The overdose may cause serious side effects.

If a standard therapeutic dose of Cafergot does not work, you may take 2-3 pills during the first signs of migraine next time.
